Yello
Yorum yap
Dieter and Boris are back with a brand new album called ”Touch”. The band was originally formed by Boris Blank (keyboards, sampling, percussion, backing vocals) and Carlos Perón (tapes) in the late 1970s. Dieter Meier (vocals, lyrics), a millionaire industrialist and gambler, was brought in when the two founders realized that they needed a singer.Carlos left the band in 1983. Their music is used in countless advertisements.Yello were truly techno before techno became what it is now. Their 80s output is impressive ending with the Flag from 1988. The Race was their biggest selling single worldwide . Touch is their 12th studio album, we would like to thank to Universal Music for making this happen. We had some questions about the new album,Dieter Meier answered our questions.Dance icons are back !!!
Tell us a little bit about the preparation of the album, how long did it take you to sit around a table and start to work on the tracks ?
Boris works lika a painter. He comes to the studio every morning and has at least 50 tracks in process. He does not like to finish one track alone, he pushes on with all of them and then decides which of the tracks will make it to the exhibition, which is in our case the album.
Looking at the album in retrospect what influences, musical or otherwise do you hear in the album? What makes this project special compare to other projects you have been involved ?
The music of YELLO is like a second face of Boris and myself. We have no choice to change it. And that’s why YELLO will always be YELLO. The new album is maybe moodier and funkier, also a little bit slicker than others, but this is just how it happened. There was no plan to go into this direction.
Can you please tell us a little bit about the preparation of the album. How much did the songs begin to change when you started to work .Did you come to the table with completed songs?
It is a dialectical process in which a brush-stroke (i.e. a note or a sound) is influencing the next one. What started maybe with the idea to paint a rose, ends up to become a donkey or a giraffe.
Do you find songwriting like a form of therapy? How autobigraphical are the songs on this album?
Whatever you do in life is sort of a therapy, because it hopefully enriches and changes the totality of your experiences sofar. Everything you create has aspects of an autobiography, whether you want it or not. In my case, as I’m not a vivisecteur, not even I can recognize the autobiographical aspect. Every word I write is an experience of myself and only possible as a result of a conglomerate of my experiences.
Did you go into the studio with any type of plan or mission for the album? How would you say that your personal styles reflects upon your new album?
The mission is always to become like children, and to find the divine uniqueness which inhabits every human being. There is no other plan than just that, enjoying the endless way to oneself.

Where does a song start when you’re writing things together? Do you start with beat?chords?
We don’t write songs together. It starts with sounds, like a painter who is mixing colors, which then are leading to a specific mood of the song. When Boris has done his job, I have the pleasure to enter his paintings and create my own character. Boris’ images are like soundtracks of a non-existing movie which runs in your brain, as soon as you hear it. This process is always a real pleasure, because Boris’ tracks are immediately leading to a character, a narration or a scene.
How different this album is from your previous albums ?
“Touch YELLO” is a platform for other artists to contribute their own ideas. On previous albums, our guest musicians performed very much according to Boris’ instructions. On “Touch YELLO”, Heidi Happy, Till Brönner and Dorothee Oberlinger are freely dancing on Boris’ sound stage.
What do you feel are your biggest accomplishments to date?
To hopefully never have been too impressed, or even artistically dying, when the music industry paints you with gold like the James Bond girl, who then could not breath anymore through the skin and eventually passed away.
I really like all the tracks but 2 of them stands out for me The expert and Part Love …How did these tracks came about ?
It’s always a shamanistic-alchemistic process for which I have no rational explanation. The only thing I know is that thanks to Boris’ most inspiring soundtracks, it never takes me more than a few hours to find the lyrics and the melody and to record a particular song.
Looking back, was it very surprising to see how the songs developed from the initial ideas that you had been talking about?
As I said, I never have an initial idea. I come to the studio with my old typewriter, and ideas fly to me like birds or bats.

With you being in the scene all this time I know you must have some words of wisdom for the up and coming artists out there. Would you care to share some of your valuable knowledge with our readers?
In art and music, there are two ways to success:
Number One is to find the divine and unique child that is buried inside yourself, which is a life-long process. The beauty of it is that nobody can steal your philosophical experience.
Number Two, you can go for prostitution in the most radical way. That can lead to big disappointment, because when you have no success, you end up like a prostitute who has not been paid for her services.
