İnternet üzerinde Square one ve Virgin Souls(diğer projesi) ile ilgili bilgi edinmeye çalıştım ama hiç bilgi yok. Bize bu iki gruptan bahsedebilir misiniz? Üyeleri kimler? Müzikleri nasıl vs?

Virgin Souls 2000 senesinde kuruldu.Grup üyeleri ; vokallerde Cameron McVey ,ben,Neil Pearson ve Paul Simm var.

Camden Town’da diğer projelerimiz üzerinde çalışırken tanıştık,konsept birbirimizin becerilerini fark etmemizle şekillendi.Başlangıçta ben ve Neil sadece hip hop ritim programcısı,turntablist ve dj idik. En acayip şeyleri sample yapma fikri sonunda çok güçlü ve özgün bir sound yakaladık .Bu Cameron McVey ve Paul Simm’in dikkati çekti.

Gerçek şu ki birbirimizi dinlemek zorundaydık,biraz komikte,Virgin Souls’un oluşma sebebi stüdyolarımızın ses geçirme özelliğinin düzgün olmamasından kaynaklandığını söyleyebilirsiniz.Diğer odada neler çalındığını/yapıldığını sürekli duymak zorundaydık.Bizde onların akorlarına ritim yapmaya başladık yada onlar bize yapmaya başladı. Bir anda kendimizi 162’yi yaparken bulduk,delice biliyorum.(162: Virgin Souls’un 2003 tarihli albümlerinin adı )

SQUARE 1 benim yeni projem…konsepti hiç yayınlamadığım parçalarım ve ortak çalışmalarımı dinleyince ortaya çıktı. Tüm parçaların soundu birbirine yakındı ve uygunuydu.Kendi şarkılarımı yazdığım zamanda kavramsal bir özü yakalamak istiyordum.Benim müziğimden ayrılmayacak,benimle aynı fikirde olabilecek bir şeyi arıyordum.

Grup üyeleri; ben ve Ruadhri Cushnan .Ama bundan fazlası var. Square one bir hedef altında birleşen artistler grubu .Müzik aşkı için harika ve anlamı olan bir şey yaratmaya çalışıyoruz.Katkıda bulunan sanatçılardan herkes çok yardımcı oldu ve bu projede yer aldıkları ötürü heyecanlılar. Yapılan artwork ve çekilen fotoğrafları ve yapılması gereken diğer işler birimiz tarafından üstlenildi. Styfling parçası buzdağının sadece görünen kısmı .

Myspace’teki playerınızdan gördüğüm kadarı ile Neneh Cherry ve Siobhan Donagy ile yayınlanmamış pek çok parçanız var .Bunları EP’de veya albümde yayınlamayı düşünüyormusunuz ?

Bunu düşündük,Virgin Souls’un birleşmesi üzerine konuşuyoruz.Bu parçalardan bazıları Square 1 adı ile piyasaya sürülebilir ama bunları konuşmak için çok erken .

Styfling internet üzerinde büyük gürültü kopardı.Bu proje nasıl ortaya çıktı?

Siobhan ile Sugababes’in ilk albümü üzerinde çalışırken tanıştım.Birlikte ilk albümü içinde bir sürü parça yazdık.Square 1 grubunun bir elemanı oldu.Styfling aslında onun ikinci albümünde yer alacaktı ama diğer parçalarından soundu çok farklı olduğu için albümüne koymadık.Shiobhan ve ben parçayı çok sevdik bu sebeple şarkıyı bitirmeye karar verdik. Daha sonra nasıl tepkiler alacağını görmek için başka bir isimle parçayı internete koyduk.
Geri dönüşler inanılmaz oldu. Hergün internetin bağımsız müziğe verdiği güce şaşırıyorum. ….parçanın promosyonu için hiçbir şey yapmadık.

Sıradan bir haftada gününüzün yüzde kaçını stüdyoda geçiriyorsunuz ?

Değişiyor,bazen stüdyoda yaşıyoruz,uyuyoruz. Bazen kendi evimde parçaları yazıyorum.Bir parçayı yazmadan önce parça üzerinde ne kadar vakit harcayacağınızı tahmin edemiyorsunuz.Müzik içersinde koybolabilirsiniz ,bir bakmışsınız ki sabahın altısı olmuş.

En çok hangi artistlerle ortak çalışmayı seviyorsunuz ?

Çeşitli tarz müzikleri seviyorum bu soruyu cevaplamak oldukça zor. Çalıştığım insanlar için büyük saygım var çünkü onların sayesinde bugünkü yaptığım iş hakkında çokca şey öğrendim.Cameron McVey ve Neneh Cherry,Siobhan ailem gibi.Onlarla çalışmak benim için ilham verici.İtiraf etmeliyim birçok ‘’cool’’insanla çalışma sansına sahip oldum. Sanıyorum para için yapılan herhangi bir prodüksüyondan ziyade kendime yakın hisettiğim prodüksüyonlardan keyif alıyorum. James Lavelle’in grubu Unkle için bir mix yaptık ,bundan gerçekten keyif aldım.

Şarkıcılarda aradığınız kriterler nedir ?

Hikaye anlatabilen sesleri seviyorum. Tüm şarkılarım hayattaki kazanılan deneyimler ve gerçek sorunlarla ilgili.Bir aktörün roluna uyması gibi sesinde bu parçalara uyması gerekiyor.Bunun dışında bir kural yok. İyi bir ses müziği daha derin düzeyde hissetmenizi sağlayacak,eğer bunu başabilirseniz elinizde özel bir şey var demektir.

Sizce müzik endüstrisinin en zor alanları nedir?

En yüksek düzeydeki insanların müziğe karşı sevgilerinin kaldığını düşünmüyorum.Daha fazla ciro yapmak için sürekli tahrik edilen alıp satma olayına döndü.Hiçkimse inandığı şeyler için risk almıyor,görünen o ki kimse artık bir şeylere inanmak istemiyor.Herkesin sürekli rakamlar konuştuğunda odaklanmak ve dinlenmeye değer birşeyler bulabilmek gerçekten zor. Bu müziği öldürüyor.

Bu sebeple biz hergün bu çöp denizinde yüzerken ,birçok harika, tarzı olan müzik duyulmamış kalıyor.Bedava download sitelerinin sonucu olarak müzik dünyasında sürekli azalarak giden bir para var. Bu şu demek yeni projeler için para yok. Kendi müziklerini duyurmaya çalışan , müzik yaparak geçimini sağlayan insanlar için çok daha zor.

İşin komik kısmı bu koşullar müzik için daha iyi oldu…çünkü bir temizlenmeye ihtiyacımız vardı.Görünüşe göre gerçek artistleri bunaltan ;radyoların listeleri,reklamlar ve pazarlama kampanyalarına karşı toplum kontrolü eline geçirdi.

Bize 2009 planlarınızdan bahseder misiniz?

Square 1 ‘’Styfling’’ EP si remixleri ile Mayıs/Haziran gibi yayınlayacak. Senenin sonunda büyük olasılıkla yeni albüm hazır olur.
Şu ara sadece çok çalışıyoruz zira gelecek projeleri kabaca biliyoruz ama eminim yakında bizden haber alacaksınız.

We ‘re kind of obsessed with Square 1 lately. They have recorded with Siobhan Donaghy (ex-Sugababes) and Neneh Cherry but who are they? İf you’re regulars to the site you know we never dissapoint with the quality of music we put here.We cant get enough of Styfling , it is going to be HUGE!

I have searched for some little information about Square one and Virgin Souls on the net but yet there seems to be none . Can you please tell us about these groups when it was formed ?Members ?Musical directions etc?

Virgin Souls was formed around year 2000, the band members are Cameron McVey ( vocals ), Silvio Pacini ( me ), Neil Pearson and Paul Simm.
We all met in a studio in Camden Town while working on other projects, the concept took shape as we increasingly became aware of each other different skills.. originally me and Neil were just hip hop beat programmers, turntablists and djs who just got really deep into the idea of sampling the weirdest shit and eventually developed a very strong and individual sound which court the attention Cameron and Pauly.. and the truth is that we had no choice but to listen to each other.. this its quite funny, u could say that Virgin Souls was possibly born because our studio rooms weren’t properly sound proofed : we both constantly had to hear what the other room was doing so we started making beats to their chords and viceversa.. next thing you know “162″ was in the making, its mental, I know. (”162 ” was the name of their debut album)

SQUARE1 is my new project.. it actually all came together as a concept after listening to a huge back catalogue of songs and collaborations i did which never saw the light of the day, they all had a similar sound and they all kinda fitted together.. at the time i was writing a lot of my own songs but needed to get hold of a conceptual core and i was looking for something that would glue my music and what am all about on the same wall.

The band members are me (Silvio) and Ruadhri Cushnan, but there is more to it then just me and Ruadhry; SQUARE1 is a collective of artists that rotates around I common objective: we are all trying to be heard creating something fierce and meaningful for the love of music”.

As I can see on your mediaplayer you have a lot of unreleased project with Siobhan Donagy and Neneh Cherry Are you planning to release these songs on a EP or on a new album.

We have thought about it, there are talks of Virgin Souls reforming and some of them will probably appear on Square1 but its really early days for that to comment any further.

Styfling making a big buzz over the internet. How did the project came about ?

I met Siobhan working on the sugababes first album and we wrote a bunch of tunes for her first solo album too, she’s now part of the Square1 collective.. thats family.Styfling was originally supposed to be on her second album but the sound was too different to fit in with the rest of her stuff.
Both me and Shiv loved it so much that we decided to finish it and stick it on the net anyway, under another name to just c what would happen..
the feedback was overwhelming, every day I still get shocked of the power that the internet has given to independent music.. we did nothing.

What percentage of your day is spent in the studio during an average week?

It really depends, sometimes we basically live in the studio.. sleep in it.Sometimes i like writing from home.You cant really estimate how long u going to spend on a tune before u get stuck in.. chances are u will get lost in the music and next ting u know its 6am again.

Which artists do you enjoy collaborating with the most?

I like a lot of music and its all different so this is a very tough question..
I have a lot of respect for all the people that i worked with so far, because trough them i learned a lot about what I am doing today: Cameron and Neneh are basically family to me and so is Siobhan and working with them is always very inspiring.I’ve had the luck to work with quite a lot of cool people i must admit, I suppose I enjoy doing the stuff that is closer to what im all about rather than just any production for money..
We just finished a mix for James Lavelle’s band “Unkle” a few weeks back, that one I really enjoyed.

What are the qualities that you search for when you are looking to work with a vocalist?

I like a voice that can tell a story, all my songs are about life experience and real issues, the voice has to fit in the character like an actor has to fit in his role.
But apart from that there are no rules really, a good voice has the power to make you feel the music at a much deeper level, If you can achieve that, u’ve got something special.

What do you feel are some of the toughest aspects of the music business?

I think a lot of the big people at the top floor haven’t got much love for the music anymore, it has become a game of buy and sell and is purely fueled by the desire of making more revenue. Nobody takes a fucking risk for what they believe in anymore, nobody “wants” to believe in anything it seems.
Its really hard to stay focused and get anything worth listening out there, when everybody else around you is just talking numbers all the time.
It just kills it, big time.Thats why a lot of great music with balls and attitude stays unheard while we all swim in “middle of the road” rubbish everyday.
So the fact that there is less and less money in the business as a result of the popularity of the free the internet download sites means that there is next to nothing to invest on new projects and its much harder for anyone to survive making music while they are trying to get heard.
Its very though to stick to your guns these days.

Funnily enough, thats kinda making it better for the music… we needed a bit of cleaning i reckon, and it seems that the public is finally taking control of things regardless of advertising, radio charts and marketing stunts which have poisoned the charts for far too long and suffocated the real artists.

Can you please tell us your plans for 2009?

SQUARE 1 is planning on releasing the “Styfling” EP with all the remixes sometimes in May/June and probably have most of the album ready by the end of the year.
We only have very rough guidelines of what’s next in the pipeline at the moment as its all about the hard work right now.. but im sure you’ll hear from us very soon x.
