2-1961 doğumlu Ohio doğumlu sanatçının 24 yaşında djlik yaparken Larry Heard ile tanışması tüm hayatını değiştirir.Yanlarına Ron Wilson’ı alıp ‘’Fingers İnc’’ isimli grubu kurarlar. Fingers İnc.’ın çıkardığı hemen hemen tüm 45likler dans klasiği sayılıyor .Bunlar ‘’ Mystery of Love’’,’’Bring down the walls’’,’’I am strong’’ halen plakçılarda satılan plaklar olmasının yanısıra ilk albümleri Another Side bugün E-bayda 280 dolara alıcı bulabilmektedir.
3-En bilinen parçaları David Morales’in altın vuruşu yaptığı ‘’I will be your friend’’ ve Photek’in ‘’Mine to give’’ i Frankie Knuckles’ın prodüktörlüğünü yaptığı ‘’Tears ‘’ olmasına rağmen ,piyasaya sürdüğü tüm parçalar djler tarafından sıkça çalınacak ve sayısız toplama albümde yerini alacaktır.
4-Bu sene Compost Records’dan yeni albümü ‘’Night-time stories’’i piyasaya süren Robert’ın sorularımızı cevaplayacak vakti hakikaken yoktu ‘’Çok yoğunum ,şehir dışında çalışıyorum ama soruları unutmadım evime geri dönünce cevaplayacağım’’ diyerek bizi mutlu etti. Dans müziği yapan prodüktörlerin ilk tercihlerinden Robert Owens sadece kendi parçaları üzerinde değil ,prodüktörlerin yaptığı parçalara da sesi ile hayat veriyor . Alçakgönüllü olduğunu çok sık duyduğumuz Robert Owens ile keyifli bir röportaj yaptık.

Larry Heard bir röportajında ‘’ Müzik yapacağınız kişi ile iki farklı ülke ve iki farklı şehirde iseniz müzik üretebilmek oldukça zor. Birkaç insanla uzak mesafeler prodüksüyonlarında çalıştım ama ilgisizdim. Dosyaları alıp ,atarkan bir süre sonra insanlar biryerlerde projeye olan ilgisini yitiriyor.Çalışacağım kişi ile bir odada olmayı bu sayede tek bir seferde kayıt yapabilmeyi tercih ediyorum. Daha evvelden gruplarda çalıştım , bilgisayarımla oyalanacağımla diğer insanlarla birlikte olmayı seviyorum. Eğlence limitleniyor ,çünkü bilgisayar fikirlere karşılık veremiyor yaptığı tek şey fikri kayıt edip ,dökümanlamak.’’demiş.
Sizin uzun mesafeli ortaklıklarınız söz konusu olduğunda bu sizin için nasıldı?Sizde ilginizi bir noktada kaybettiniz mi?
Ben her türlü çalışma şartı ile rahatım,bilgisayar veya şahsen çalışmak benim için okeydir.Ama çoğu insan beni çalışırken oda da isterler.

Kym Sims,D’Bora ,Adeva,Ce ce Peniston ,house müziğin gelişmesini istiyorsak house müzik topluluğu olarak bu tarz artistleri desteklemeliyiz. Ama zamanla bu artistler azaldı çünkü ;
A)House müziğin sanatçılarının cd/ plak /single /albüm satışları düşüktür.
B) Harika single ve albümler çıkarttılar ama house müzik dinleyicileri tarafından desteklenmediler.
C) Büyük plak şirketleri onlarla uğraşmak istemedi.
D) İllegal downloadlar kariyerlerini mahvetti.
E) Günümüzün yeni starları artık Disc Jokeyler,İsimleri artık şarkıcıların önüne geçiyor .X dj featuring Y şarkıcısı ya da ‘’DJ X, Y şarkıcısını takdim eder’’ gibi…
Sizce bu hatalardan hangisi yapıldı ,ve dans müzik endüstrisinde bir artist olarak sizin yaşadığınız zorluklar nedir ?
Sanatçılar hakkında söylediğiniz herşey doğru ama biz artistlerin amaçları çok yüksek olmalı .Ondan sonra ilgisizliği kaldırabiliriz.
Ben insanları iyi hissetirmeyi seviyorum. İnsanların yüzlerinde mutluluk ve sevinç görmeyi seviyorum. Bunun dışındaki herşey,ödenmesi gereken küçük bir değer.

O kadar dolaşıyorum ki yeni albümüm için stüdyoya giremedim.Şarkı yazmaya başlamayı umuyorum,kiminle olduğundan emin değilim, ama heyecanla bekliyorum.

Robert Owens (born 1961) is an R&B/Urban and House music vocalist best known for his work with the Chicago house group Fingers, Inc. in the mid-1980s. As a solo artist he has placed several songs on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, two of which hit #1: “I’ll Be Your Friend” (1992), and “Mine To Give,” a collaboration with Photek.

Though electronica has always been a producer’s medium (and the few vocalists keeping their heads above water are usually women), Robert Owens became one of the figures most associated with the late-’80s golden era of Chicago house. Born in Ohio in 1961, he grew up singing in the church, but was working as a DJ when he met pioneering Chicago producer Larry Heard in 1985. The pair formed Fingers Inc. with Ron Wilson, and released a few singles (”You’re Mine,” “It’s Over”) and the 1988 full-length Another Side. The group dissolved soon after as Heard’s burgeoning solo-production career (as Mr. Fingers) took over.
Owens had already released tracks on his own – “Bring Down the Walls” and “I’m Strong” for Alleviated, with production from Heard, and signed a solo contract with 4th & B’way Records. His 1990 album “Rhythms in Me” disappeared soon after within the quickly disintegrating Chicago house scene. (One of his best-known features of the late 1980s, the epic house moment “Tears,” appeared under the names of Frankie Knuckles and producer Satoshi Tomīe.)
Owens had virtually retired from music by the early ’90s. By 1996, he had returned to dance music with Ordinary People, a two-part EP for Musical Directions. He teamed up with Tomiie and Cevin Fisher for a track from Tomiie’s Full Lick LP in 1999, and one year later appeared on the Photek smash “Mine to Give.”
He collaborated with Coldcut on their album Sound Mirrors, on the track “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” in 2006.
In October 2004, I’ll Be Your Friend appeared in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on the House Music radio station SF-UR.

After a year house music legend will be performing again in İstanbul .This time he will be at The Hall on 15th of October.

Larry Heard stated on his last interview that ,” It’s kind of hard to produce music together when you’re in two separate cities and two separate countries. I’ve tried long distance productions with a couple of people but I just wasn’t into it. When you’re sending files back and forth, everybody ends up losing interest somewhere along the way. I prefer to work with the other person in the room and you can get it done in one shot. I come from being in bands so I like to be with other humans as opposed hanging out with my computer. The fun is limited because the computer can’t react to ideas—all it can do is record and document the idea.”
How this long distance collaboration works for you ?
Do you loose your interest in some point ?
I’m comfortable working in all kinds of ways, computer or in person is cool with me but most people would like to have me right there in the room.

Kym Sims,D’Bora,Adeva,Ce ce Peniston , I think to make house scene stronger we need to support more artists like them.But in time the artists are decreased because of:
a) House music artists do not sell well
b)They did put great tracks and albums but havent been supported from the house scene.
c)Major labels dont want to deal with them.
d) İllegal downloads ruined their careers …
e)Djs are the new stars .And their names are infront of singers like X dj featuring singers or X dj presents singer
Which one you think that was made as a mistake ,and what difficulties you are facing in dancemusic industry as an artist?
Everything you are saying about artist is correct, but we as artist must hold a higher purpose then we rise above this indifference, i love making people feel good and seeing joy and happiness on their faces so everything else, is a small price to pay.

Tell us about your plans for future collaborations/albums etc…
The only plan I have is to keep loving and giving as much as i can back to the world, also working on my next album for compost records.The main thing i should be working on is my next album for compost records, but i’ve been on the road so much i haven’t had time to get in the studio, I hope to start writing so, not sure about with who yet, but looking forward to,

Not at the moment, i’m just happy to be alive, loving and giving.

28 Haziran 2001 Deep Dish Park Ormanda sahne aldığından beri bu kadar eğlenmemiştik.O partide bulunan ”eğlence ruhunu” yıllar sonra Robert Owens’ın konserinde gördük ve hissetik. Zira herkes deli gibi dans ederken şarkılarına eşlik ediyordu.”Can you feel it”, ”Tears”,” İnside my world”,”Mine to give”,”I’ll be your friend” parçalarını farklı yorumlarla canlı olarak söylerken gerilere 1989-1990 senelerine gittik. O zaman Robert Owens konserinin gerçekleşeceğini söyleseler herhalde o kişiye güler geçerdik.

Robert Owens muhteşem bir konser verdi,dans müziğinin kaymağı klasiklerini arka arkaya söylerken inanın herkes dans ediyordu .Saruhan Batur’a ne kadar teşekkür etsek azdır zira iki dönemdir kendisi The Hall’un programını yapıyordu.
Saruhan’un The Hall’dan grubundan ayrıldığını üzülerek öğrenmiş bulunmaktayız. Umarız The Hall getireceği kişilerin seçimine aynı titizlikle devam eder.
