We all know Osunlade is a terrific producer and DJ. Did you know that he also sings? Well, he does as heard on his single, Butterfly from his debut album Rebirth which dropped on Nov 30th. This track also presents Osunlade in a laidback jazzy mode and not the soulful house we’ve become accustomed to. Rebirth will feature him not only producing and singing but also writing. This is the most personal record he has ever written.

Looking at the album in retrospect what influences, musical or otherwise do you hear in the album? What makes this project special compare to other projects you have been involved ?

This album is basically the complete story of my life in terms of my personal relationships and evolution. The musical influences range from prince, lenny kravitz, meshell ndegeocello, stevie wonder and just about any artists ive heard throughout my lifetime.

Tell us a little bit about the preparation of the album. How much did the songs begin to change when you started to work .Did you come to the table with completed songs?

The album has been in the works since 1994. Most of the songs were written before 2000. They have all be re worked and re-recorded. There are about 4 songs that are new additions but for the most part they are songs that have lived within me for some time.

Do you find songwriting like a form of therapy? How autobigraphical are the songs on this album?

It is therapy for sure, once a song is written, its a situation of part of my experience acknowledged and exposed, therfore released. All the songs are autobiographical.

Did you go into the studio with any type of plan or mission for the album? How would you say that your personal style reflects upon your new album?

No plans in the studio. I dont work that way, i simply write when something inspires me to create, a relationship, beauty of nature..anything!

How have you changed personally since you have started lfa?

In every way, I am a different person totally! Balanced

Speculation arose this past week that News Corp.-owned MySpace Music (NWS) is considering moving to a paid model, since the cost of free streaming is making its current model unsustainable.Do you think that after loosing a lot of its clients to facebook.Myspace come to an end ? What could Myspace deliver that people would pay for ? Considering this information given from myspace if I was starting my career in music business what advise would you give me to expose my music to other people?

I don’t think people will pay for any social networking site as human nature especially today is one that has no monetary value as the generation of today lives in a world where everything is accesible for free somehow. If myspace goes down, there will be another forum to replace it, that goes for any of the social networking sites in my opinion.

How do you see the current state of afro house ? With only two sites digital download sites (traxsource,afrodesiamp3) do you think it gets the attention it deserves ?

I think that misconception is the problem. That there are only two digital sites that support house music is untrue. There are sooo many sites that service all types of house music, its just that traxsource, beatport, dancetracks and the msot common ones are the ones people use most, however the diversity of music in gerneal especially house music, is offered on a multitude of digital sites. Its simply a matter of searching outside the box.

Did you feel very stressed going into ‘’Rebirth’’ project after the massive success you’ve had in the last few years? Are you afraid of loosing some fans because that is something very different than what you did before ?

Not at all, I’m never cooncerned with those types of things. I create for myself first, then whomever connects with it, usually are there for the extended stay.

Can you tell us a little bit about the new album you are planning to release this spring?

Its another house album entitled “Romantique”. Its an extention of the house music im creating now. A bit more organic but with technological additives.

Mariah Carey recently stated : “Frickin’ idiots! A lot of big, powerful music industry executives made a giant mistake and now we’re all paying the price. They gave the music business away on the internet. If they had just sat back and said, ‘Maybe let’s figure this internet thing out, it could be something cool,’ we could have found a way to distribute music online on our own terms, not somebody else’s. Prince had already shown them the way. He was so far ahead of the curve, putting his records out on the web. Everyone else was stupid.”

Well, again, its human nature..we’ve always shared music from day one, only before it was a cassette or even 8-track or cd, now the quality is spot on from what was created in the studio. Record labels are always the last to get it, their only concern is about the mighty dollar, not about the art that ittakes to create that dollar. So in the end we all suffer because now there are too many outlets and not enough information on them all. Music gets lost unless people seek beneath the surface.

But on the other hand music futurist Gerd Leonhard says’’ I don’t really like the term piracy. This is not piracy in my opinion. The way that kids, well internet users, use the internet to source music is not piracy. It is a way of getting it for free. Basically it is a means of access and sharing bookmarks, and that has to be monetised in a whole new system. Rather than trying to sell them copies and physical products, or access for $1 per song like Apple, we need to sell them the access to that data and the sharing of that data.
Like radio and television – rather than going to the gig to listen, they can listen to it on the radio; but of course money can be made both ways. Because habits have changed so much we need to give them music in an entirely different way. I think that this whole current debate on the topic of Free and Freemium is pointing in this direction. How can we give them something that feels like free but they’ve spent the money anyway as a consequence?”
Do you agree ? What is your input ?

I agree, it makes total sense! Its not rocket science!

How do you feel you have influenced how the dance scene has evolved in the past ten years ?

I think that dance music in general is watered down bullshit, everyone has some type of program to (create) music more or less as well, now that people who make this music found out that sites like traxsource will add their none existing label to their site. Its all gone to shit.

Did you find it difficult putting things in perspective as far as which direction your music should go?Are you still enjoying making music as much as when you started, or maybe more-so?

I again never think of music in those terms, it is a creative process form which I am born, I dont think to create whats natural for me. Its not authentic if you have to do that in my opinion.

Simon Dunmore said in one of his interviews that ” Dance music is certainly in decline from the levels that it used to enjoy. It was so gargantuan that it had to decline, there was no other way for it to go – it was all conquering. But with the fact that it was so massive it lost all of its soul. It was all about numbers and money and it was becoming less and less to do with music. As a result dance music became safe and boring. It was a natural thing because it was so huge people just shied away from it and it had to go back underground and re-invent itself. There is definitely still a dance music scene especially if you’re putting out good music and doing good events. There is still a scene there but not on the level that it used to be so it has definitely declined. And the reason that there is so much hype about it is that people aren’t making the money that they used to. People didn’t identify the change quickly enough and as a result a lot of people have gone out of business. That’s what people are writing about really. ” Do you agree ? What is your input?

I agree that people including myself were not quick enough to get on board however I cant speak about what other people are writing about. I dont listen to much house music outside of dj gigs. My music is jazz and folk.

Can you tell us what you’re working on at the moment? What are your plans for 2010?

I’m currently working on completing my photography book. No other plans for 2010.
