Michael Fossati aslında diş doktoru ama house müzik benliğini o kadar çok sarmışki 1996’dan bu yana dünyanın en çok takip edilen sitelerinden birinin sahibi olmuş. Sadece yepyeni promoları arka arkaya çalmakla kalmayan Michael aynı zamanda ünlü house djleri ile röportajlar yapıyor . Bununla birlikte  eline geçen tüm promoların yazıya döküp müzik yazarlığıda yapıyor yani bir nevi müzik eleştirmeni. Güney Afrika’dan Londra’ya,İsveç’ten Amerika’ya kadar hayranı var hepside onun yerinin doldurulamayacağını kendileri için büyük ilham kaynağı olduğunu söylüyor.Bizde size Michael Fosattti’yi yakından tanıtmak istedik.

Büyürken gördüğünüz djler arasında , dj olmak için esinlendiğiniz belirli bir an oldu mu ?

Belirli bir an değilde,müzik sevgisi ,sürekli djlerin dinleyenlerine ulaştırdıkları sevgi ve kendilerini ifade etme yeteneğini gördükçe kısa sürede etkilendim.

Insanların istediği müziği ve cebimi dolduracak müziği çalmadığım için klüp djyinden daha çok bedroom dj’yi olduğum üzerinde durmak istiyorum. Bu işi ”müzik sevgisi” için yapıyorum.Klüplerde arasıra  çalıyorum bu deneyimlerim bana düzenli gig sağlıyor. Websitem bana aradığımı verdi, tüm dinleyicilere kendimi ifade edebiliyorum.

Geriye dönüp baktığınızda yaşamınızın hangi kesiti sizin müzik zevkinizi en çok etkiledi?

Okula gittiğim 80lerin ortasında,radyoda çalınan müzikleri  ve arkadaşlarımın dinlediklerini alıyordum.80lerin ortasında diğer müzik tarzlar ile tanıştırıldım.Bunlar İsviçre’de çalınsa bile son derece az klüpte çalınıyordu ve bu tür müzikler çok nadiren radyolarda duyulmakta idi. Bu dönemde r&b,soul müzik türlerini keşfettim , bu türü çok sevdim.Rap/Hip-hop u keşfetmemin arkasından ”house müzik” hayranı  oldum .

Websiteniz senelerdir devam ettiriyorsunuz ama prodüksüyon söz konusu olduğunda buna oldukça uzaktasınız. Bunun sebebi işinizden dolayı vakit ayıramamanız mı ,yoksa bu kısımla ilgilenmeyip sadece yeni parçaların tanıtımını mı yapmak niyetinizdesiniz ?

Evet,zaman beni kısıtlayan bir faktör müzik dışında ilgilendiğim alanlarda mevcut. Mesela film izlemeyi özellikle bilim kurgu ve action film izlemeyi çok severim.Bunun ötesinde  prodüksüyonun bana vereceği hazzın, hep pikapların arkasındaki iken alacağım hazdan büyük olmayacağını düşündüm.Ama hiç bilinmez ,belki bir gün yaparım.

Avrupa’da house müziğin tanıtımının liderlerinden birisisiniz, house müziğin bugünkü durumu ile ilgili neler söyleyeceksiniz ?

Geçtiğimiz bir kaç sene ile kıyasladığınızda ya da 80lerin sonu 90 ların başı ile kıyasladığınızda farklı düşünceler var.

Müzikteki ilerleme ve değişmelerin yararlı olduğunu düşünüyorum.Bu şekilde müzik yeni alanlar keşfeder ve halen ilgi çekici kalır.Son zamanlardaki bazı değişmelerin house müziği kötü etkilediğini düşünüyorum.

Mesela dijital ortamda hiçbir masraf ödemeden herkes kendi ürünlerini diğerlerine sunabilir.Bu durum birçok kötü parçanın piyasaya çıkması ile sonuçlanıyor.

Eskiden promoların dağıtımı için maddi kaynak sağlanırdı.(Seçilmiş bir kaç dj’in asetatları aldığını hatırlıyor musunuz ? )

Yaşadığımız bir önceki milleniumun sonunda insanlar WMCden döndüklerinde en büyük parça hakkında konuşmadılar mı ? Bu son bir kaç senedir oluyor mu? WMC Recaps dosyamı okuyun ne demeye çalıştığımı daha iyi anlayacaksınız.

Biri house müziğin artık ”piyasa” olduğu söyleyebilir .Piyasa olmak demek ”ticari” demektir.Bu da insanların para kazanma isteğini uyandırır.(Gerçekten hatırladığınız patirler küçük ”underground” partiler değil midir?)

Dünyada bu işi cidden müzik sevgisi ile yapan güvenilir prodüktörler var.Bu kişilerin varlığı sayesinde  ”Spirit of House” sitesinin yayınını devam ettiriyorum. Her hafta bana geri dönenlerden aldığım bilgi  sayesinde biliyorumki house müzik seven çok insan var.

James Holden bir röportajında ;’’Günümüzde dans müziğindeki değişim ,herkesin bir laptopu ve cracklenmiş Ableton programı var.Birden bire herkes ‘’Ableton Techno’’ dediğim müziği yapıyor ve tüm bu standart sesleri kullanan ‘’yayan’’ plaklar ortaya çıkıyor.
Eğer bir şey yaygın ve yapılması kolay ise onun artık değeri yok. Her zaman bu tarz müzikleri seven insanları kızdırdığım için dikkatli olmalıyım ama bu konuda saatlerce dırdır edebilirim’’demiş.Katılıyormusunuz ? Sizin bu konuda düşünceleriniz nedir?

Bu yukarıda bahsettiğim şeyle aynı ..artık birşey yaratıp ”müzik” adını verip piyasaya sürmek son derece kolay. Evet,piyasaya sürülen müziklerin  birbirine benziyor bunun sebebi  bir enstrüman çalmayı öğrenmek  yerine bir kaç tuşa basmak yeterli olmasıdır .Eğer bir prodüktör kendine air benzersiz bir sound geliştirir ise bu o kadar kötü birşey olmamalı. 90′ların başındaki Masters At Work ,Roger Sanchez ve Todd Terry klasiklerini hatırlayın seneler boyunca bu parçaları hem dinledik hem de çaldık.

Son derece yetenekli James Holden’ın ‘’Canlı performanslar ‘’ ile ilgili ilginç bir açıklamasını okudum.Son zamanlarda ‘’Canlı/Live ’’ kelimesi ,plak ve cd çalmayan tüm djler için kullanılır olmaya başladı.(Ableton Live 7 )

Bu terimin kullanımı hakkında siz ne düşünüyorsunuz ? Sizce bu terimin ,birçok dj daha önceden kayıt aldıkları plaklarını çalarken ve sadece üzerlerine efekt koyarken kullanımı doğru mudur?

Bence ”Live” sözcüğü müzisyen ve şarkıcıları içerir , daha önceden kayıt edilmiş sesleri çalmak veya manipule etmek için drum machine ve laptop tuşlarına basmayı içermez.

DJliğe başladığınız günden bu yana djliğin gelişimi hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz ?

Benim için DJler kitleleri eğlendirmek ve vakitlerini iyi geçirtmek için vardır. Bunu geçmişte yaptılar,günümüzde de yapıyorlar. Gelgelelim bazı djler kendilerini olduklarından daha büyük göstermeye çabalıyorlar.

Bir klüp veya bar anaokulu değildir,insanlar eğlenmek için para öderler.

Favori dj ve remixlerınızı bize söyler misiniz? .

Her zaman Tony Humphries ve Louie Vega‘yı eşsiz stilleri için sevdim. Asırlardır bu işin içersinde olduklarını ve sadece house müzik çalmadıklarını hatırlayın. Dünya üzerinde harika yeni djlerde var, ama birşekilde çoğu bende iz bırakmadı zira yaratıcılık ve eşsizlikten mahrumlar.Ama sadece bu iki kişiden bahsetmem kesinlikle adil olmaz her ne kadar kendilerini pikapların başında göremesemde Merlin Bobb,Larry Levan ve Paul ”Trouble” Anderson dans müziğinde oldukça yaratıcı isimlerdir.

Remixerlara geldiğimizda hangi zaman diliminden konuştuğumuza bağlı.1980′lerde Shep Pettibone,David Morales ve Frankie Knuckles (Klasikleşen soulful Dex Mix sound’u nereye kayboldu?) favorilerimdir. 1990larda ise Roger Sanchez ,Fire Island,Kerri Chandler ve Masters At Work var.

Yaşadığımız milleniumda bu seçim biraz daha zor….Masters At Work halen harika işler çıkarıyor,Mood II Swing’in enfes remixleri var.Çok fazla müziğin piyasaya sürüldüğü ve yeni piyasaya çıkan bolca djlerin kendi işlerini yaptığı günümüzde ben  sanırım sadece 1980 ve 1990′lardaki favorilerimi söyleyeceğim.

2008’in en iyi elektronik albümü sizce hangisiydi ?

Bu soru oldukça zor …  Fanatix ’in ‘’This thing of ours’’ bence fevkalade bir albümdü. Tutku ile yapılan orkestrasyon ve hem müzik hem de prodüksüyon becerisi ile birleştirilmişti.Zamansız soulful bir albümdü.Sık sık bu albümü dinliyorum.

Yeni dj’ler için onlara verebileceğiniz 5 önemli tavsiye nedir? Bunları söyleyebilir misiniz?

• Hem müzik hem de djlik yetenekleriniz üzerinde pratik yapın ve iyileştirin.

• Sizi diğerlerinden farklı kılacak stilinizi bulun. ( Diğer djleri  taklit etmeyin, moda olanı diğerleri takip ettiği için takip etmeyin.)

•Partiler yaparak ve setler hazırlayarak isminizi duyurun.Kendi reklamınızı yapmanız gerekiyor.

• Hatalarınızdan ders çıkartın – her DJ’in kötü setleri olmuştur.

• Partilere gidin ,neler olduğunu görün ve diğer DJ’lerden bu işin inceliklerini öğrenin.

Bize 2009 planlarınızdan bahsedebilir misiniz ?

Önümüzdeki sene 40 yaşında olacağım. Spirit of House sitesinin 15.senesi olacak. Önümüzdeki aylarda geleceğim üzerinde düşünme zamanı geldi. Bir aile kurmak önceliklerimden birisi olacak.Bu sebepole Spirit of House’da neler olacağını söyleyemem.Zaman gösterecektir.

Michael Fossati was for a long time Radio Dj and now journalist. Besides putting out mixes and reviewing tracks, he is truly an inspiration for all djs and producers .Michael Fossati’s website was born in 1996, The idea of the website was to share his love for House and Garage music with other people. Since then, the website has grown and features weekly reviews, news and mixes with the latest tunes available.

Given the pedigree of DJs that you witnessed growing up, is there a particular moment where you were inspired to become a DJ?

Not really a particular moment, it was more a combination of loving the music and regularly experiencing how the DJ’s brought joy to the crowd and expressed themselves. It didn’t take long and I got infected…

However it is important to stress out that I’m more of a bedroom DJ than a club DJ, simply for the reason that I don’t get anything out of just playing what the crowd wants to hear or what would bring the most money into my pocket. It’s “for the love of music” that I’m doing it, and since I only play occasionally in clubs these experiences do mean and do give me much more regular gigs ever could… The website gave me exactly what I was looking for: a way to express myself to a global audience.

When you look at past, which part of your life most effected your musical taste?

You know, in the beginning (the early to mid 80’s when I still went to school) I was just buying the stuff that was played on radio and that my friends were listening to as well, but gladly in the mid 80’s I got introduced to other music styles that existed but were only played in smaller clubs (if at all) and very rarely could be heard on radio in Switzerland. This is when I discovered the whole range of black music and fell in love with r&b and soul, started listening to some rap/hip-hop and became a house fanatic…

The site has been up for so many years but you try to stay away from production .Is it because you have a full time job or is it because you don’t want to be involved in that side just promotion ?

Yes, time is a limiting factor, and I do have other interests besides music as well (for instance, I’m a movies fan too and enjoy watching action and sci-fi movies…). Furthermore, I never felt that production is something that would give me the same satisfaction that standing behind the decks does. But you never know, maybe one day I’ll do it…

How would you describe the state of house music now, as you are one of the leaders promoting new music in Europe.

When comparing the situation to a couple of years back – or looking even further back to the late 80’s, early 90’s -, there are clearly mixed emotions… I do believe in progress and changes being a good thing as music needs to evolve to stay of interest and explore new grounds, but some of the recent changes I do feel have a really bad impact on house music.

For instance, the digitalization means that everyone now can make his product available to anyone at almost no cost. This leads to too much music released nowadays, with way too many of them being simply average if not bad or – to say the truth – crap. Back in the day money had to be invested to hand promos out (remember those days when only a very few selected DJ’s had advance copies on dub-plates/acetates?).

Then when you think of the end of the last millennium, didn’t people come back from the Winter Music Conference and talk about THE tune of the conference? Now did this happen in the past few years? Just read my “WMC Recaps” and you know what I’m talking about…

One could also say that house became somewhat of mainstream – and mainstream means commercialisation and this raises interest with many people that just want to make money out of it… (and aren’t the smaller more underground parties the ones you truly remember?)

Gladly there are producers and DJs around that keep it real and authentic – they are the ones that keep ME going with doing “Spirit of House”… and from the feedback I get every week I know that there are many lovers of house music out there…

James Holden stated in one of his interviews that;”The change in dance music is that now everyone has a laptop and everyone can get a cracked copy of Ableton, so suddenly everyone is making what I call ‘Ableton techno’, and you get all these pedestrian records that just use the default sounds. When something is so common and easy to make, it has no value any more. I have to be careful as I always end up pissing people off who like that kind of thing, but I could be grumpy about it for hours…” What is your input?

This goes with what I said above… it’s just way to easy to create something and give it the ‘music’ tag and put it out. And yes, a lot of stuff sounds alike, probably because just a few buttons have to be hit instead of learning how to play an instrument. But as long as producers find their own unique sound, using those tools does not have to be a bad thing – just remember that classic Masters at Work, Roger Sanchez or Todd Terry sounds from the 90’s which we’ve been digging for years..

I have just read with interest a statement made by the supremely talented James Holden with regards to ‘Live’ performances. I say read with interest because his views completely reflect mine in terms of what is now considered a ‘live set’. Recently in dance music, ‘Live’ seems to be the buzz-word given to anyone performing without vinyl or CD decks. (ableton live 7 )

Is this really the correct term, when many famous or even not so famous acts are playing their pre-recorded records, and just using effects over the top of them ?

Live to me means there is a band consisting of musicians and singers, and not just some people hitting some buttons on a drum machine or laptop to play or manipulate pre-recorded sounds.

‘‘It it is one thing that I can say about Michael is that his site is ALWAYS up to date. This shows how much passion he has to keep house alive! I”m on many house sites and I can honestly say that if I want to hear what’s current, spirit of house.com will have it in a mix. He also let’s you know what’s up in the house industry with his interviews and what I call his “AFTER ACTION REPORTS” his reports for his attendance at different functions. What are your thoughts on the evolve of djing since you started and where it is now?

To me, DJs are there to entertain the crowd and give them a good time. They did this in the past, and they still do it today, however many of them feel like they have to produce themselves and just go over the top the way they act. A club or bar is not kindergarten, people pay to be entertained.

Tell us your favourite djs and remixers.

I always loved Tony Humphries and Louie Vega for their unique styles which they adapted over time (remember that they are in business for decades and did not just play house in the past), but there are many other great young upcoming DJs around, but somehow many of them did not leave a mark on me as they lack creativity and uniqueness. But it would be unfair just to mention those two as – albeit I never could experience them live – people like Merlin Bobb, Larry Levan or Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson have been seminal to dance music.

When it comes to remixers, it depends of the era we talk about. In the 80’s, Shep Pettibone, David Morales and Frankie Knuckles (man, where has that classic soulful DEF-mix sound been gone?) are my favourites, then in the 90’s I would say Roger Sanchez, Fire Island, Kerri Chandler and Masters at Work.

Now in this millennium it gets a bit tougher… Masters at Work still do fantastic stuff, Mood II Swing had some brilliant remixes, but with so much music released nowadays you have a plethora of newcomers doing their stuff, so I stay with the favourites from the 80’s and 90’s.

Which album you think was the best electronic album of 2008?

Oh boy, not an easy one here… “This thing of ours” by Fanatix as I think this is a brilliant album that combines passion with masterful orchestration and both musical and production skills – simply outstanding soulful house music with a timeless touch. I still listen to this one regularly…

Tell us 5 most important advise to new comer djs;

• Practice and refine both your technical and musical skills

• Find your own style to stand out from the rest (don’t try to imitate others, don’t follow trends just because others do)

• Make yourself a name by throwing parties or handing out mix tapes – you need to promote yourself

• Learn from your mistakes – every DJ has his bad days (gigs) every now and then

• Go out to parties to see what’s happening and to learn from other DJs

”I started looking on the internet for House Music Mixes close to ten years ago and Spirit of House.com was a site that came up when I searched house music. No where else on the net could I find a better quality of house music and mixes and on a weekly basis. All the other house music sites were monthly mixes, only a few kept a updated mix regularly, but it was ONLY DJ Fossati that was continually consistent and he never seemed to run out of new music. DJ Mike Fossati hands down was my number 1 source of hearing fresh new house music. He’s a terrific DJ and it was a great thrill meeting him at past years WMC’s. What is next for Michael Fossati, can you please tell us about your plans ?

With me turning 40 years old next year and doing “Spirit of House” for around 15 years then, I think it is time in the next few months to think about what my future should look like… definitely, starting a family will be one of my priorities… so I can’t really tell what in terms of “Spirit of House” is ahead… only time will tell.
